There are doubts about this species precise origin and it is possible that the indication of provenance of this species is incorrect. The species has not been found in the wild after the first collection, even though some surveys have been done specifically to find the species (Castillon and Castillon 2010). There is uncertainty as to whether the species is from Ibity.

The main threat in the area where this species is found is the increment of induced fires in grasslands linked to cattle ranching and agricultural activities. Fires are also link to political reasons, is a way people manifest discontent with the political situation. The species has been collected for horticultural purposes and this has likely caused a decline in the number of mature individuals.

The species is found in six botanical gardens outside of Madagascar (BGCI 2018), and it is listed in CITES Appendix I (CITES 2019). Although the Ibity Mountains are a protected area, where the species is assumed to be present, it is not exempt from annual fires.
