There are three documented subpopulations. The eastern most subpopulation visited by Bally in October 1956 was very localized. The subpopulations in the Mait pass area is bigger (S. Carter pers. comm.).

Habitat degradation is the main threat to this species. The Juniperus forests around Erigavo (including the Mait pass) have been severely degraded by logging (Thulin 1994) in the past.
