Since this plant was last collected in 1955, it has never again been found in the wild, even though expeditions in the area have been conducted.

Most of the area where this species is supposed to occur has been converted to agricultural land. The plant has not been found in its natural habitat for over sixty years, however, it is exhibited at many botanic gardens around the world and it is found in international trade, so it is suspected that it was subject of illegal collecting in the past.

The plant is not found in any protected areas but it is recorded in 31 botanic gardens (BGCI PlantSearch 2018). This species is listed in CITES Appendix I (CITES 2019). More research is needed in order to establish if this plant still exists in the wild and what is the extent of its distribution, population size and threats.
