This plant is threatened by the destruction of its habitat by annual bush fire set for land-clearing and pastureland, and illegal collecting of living plant in their natural habitat.

It is recorded within four protected areas (Missouri Botanical Gardens, 2018): Andringitra, Bezà-Mahafaly, Isalo, Tsinjoriake (La Table/St Augustin). Seeds have been collected and stored in the Millennium Seed Bank, UK and duplicated in country at the Silo National des Graines Forestières (SNGF).
