État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
This species occurs as scattered subpopulations in high-elevation, temperate deciduous forests in the mountains of the southern portion of the Basin and Range physiographic province.
During the Pliocene/Pleistocene era, Arcto-Tertiary geo-flora genera such as Alnus, Ostrya, Salix, Populus and Betula extended their ranges southward into the mountains of central Arizona, west-central New Mexico, south-central Chihuahua and northwestern Sonora. As the Holocene era progressed the climate changed and many species of these genera became “trapped” in high elevation, restricted habitats and were reduced to today’s scattered populations. Many species of the aforementioned genera are now classified as a Pleistocene relicts.
