État de la populationExpert

Currently, the population trend and size are unknown but the population is suspected to be declining as the quality of habitat on Mulanje Mountain continues to decline due habitat change as a result of too frequent fire.  The species is known from six herbarium collections ranging from 1958–1981, and it was collected for the Millennium Seed Bank between 2006 and 2008. Monitoring is required to determine the current population size and the severity of threats.

Description complète des menacesExpert
Frequent wildfires, ignited by communities for game hunting or during illegal timber harvesting, are a significant threat to this species as they lead to habitat composition changes; in particular, the pioneer species, Pteridium aquilinum, becomes overly dominant with too frequent fire and outcompetes indigenous species.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
Although Mt Mulanje is a forestry reserve, there are no specific conservation measures or management plans in place for this species. It is known from one ex situ collection (BGCI 2024). Studies need to be conducted to determine the impact of the habitat degradation from too frequent fires on the population.

This species was previously assessed as Vulnerable (VU D2) (Msekandiana and Mlangeni 2002). The change in status to Endangered is non-genuine due to incorrect application of the Red List criteria.
