This species occurs in forest remnants (Cerón and Bernal 2004) and is threatened by deforestation due to timber trade, mining and oil palm plantations.

This species has not been recorded from any National Park in Ecuador. However, it has been collected in private forest reserves such as the Bosque Protector Los Cedros (Imababura, Ecuador). The species is cultivated ex situ in the Selva Chi Reserve, in Esmeraldas, Ecuador (Couell et al. 2022).
