No quantitative population data are available for this species. Merckx and Bidartondo (2008) report collecting Afrothismia foertheriana plants in 2006 at two separate sites approximately 1-2  km apart within the Diongo Community Forest, so there may be two subpopulations.

This species is severely threatened by illegal logging and agricultural encroachment (mainly smallholder oil palm and cocoa cultivation) (Franke et al. 2004, BirdLife International 2017).
