In recent years Mount Kala has been visited by many botanists in connection with the vegetation study of the habitat of a rare ground-dwelling bird, Pithacartes. Species of Afrothismia usually occur as a cluster of a few to dozens of individuals at a site of up to some tens of m2 (M. Cheek pers. obs. 2017). However, no more plants of A. amietii have been found at Mount Kala since the Type specimen was collected in April 1970, and according to the collector only a single individual was seen and collected at that time. Based on this information we estimate a population size of less than 50 mature individuals.

The main threat to this species is loss and degradation of its forest habitat due and agricultural expansion (shifting agriculture or small-holder farming). Mount Kala is an unprotected area close to the rapidly expanding capital city of Yaoundé. Habitat degradation, from illegal logging followed by agriculture (J. M. Onana pers. comm. 2017) has occurred at Mount Kala recently and is expected to continue. Areas of logged forest and farmland are clearly visible on GoogleEarth.

No conservation measures or management plan are in place for this species. It is not recorded from any protected areas. Searching for the species at the Type locality is advised in order to pinpoint and protect its site within the surviving forest. It is to be hoped that the species still survives at Mount Kala, or might be found at other localities where its protection can be ensured.
