This species is ruderal in habit and appears to be common in disturbed forests, throughout its range. There is no information available on population size or trend.

Threats to the native flora are varied within the range of this species but primarily come from habitat loss. However, it appears to display a very good resilience to anthropogenic disturbances. Collections of the taxon in severely disturbed forest (burned and felled), by roadsides, in various stages of succession after forest clearance indicate a ruderal habit and a very good ability to persist, regenerate and colonize disturbed and secondary vegetation (Swaine and Hall 1983). The taxon is used as a medicinal herb in folk medicine and is cultivated. Fruits may also be harvested in the wild for this purpose. The impact of fruit harvesting on the population is unknown.

This species has been collected within a few protected areas across its range, e.g. the Atewa Range Forest Reserve (Ghana) which is currently under threat from mining at present. The taxon does not appear to be in ex situ cultivation by any botanical institutions (BGCI 2018), however, it is cultivated as a medicinal herb in Cameroon.

Surveys should be conducted in historical sites of collection and potentially suitable habitats to clarify the current range of this species. The taxon has interesting medicinal properties and efforts should be made for germplasm conservation and maintenance of the genetic diversity of the population.
