There are 17 known subpopulations for this species. No numerical population information is available and the current population trend is suspected to be decreasing due to illicit collection and wood harvesting. This species was last collected in 2023 from Madagascar in Toamasina provinces (Spirit collection, Antananarivo, #1064T552/2).

This species is threatened by wood harvesting. As an epiphyte, this species will not be able to survive should its phorophyte be removed.

In La Reunion, 12 subpopulations of Aeranthes tenella are recorded in the protected area network. In Madagascar, the known subpopulations of this species occur in Marojejy, Pointe a Larre and Corridor Forestier Ambositra-Vondrozo protected areas. This species is included in Appendix II of CITES. It is not known to be represented in ex situ conservation.
