The population of Aerangis modesta is currently thought to be decreasing since its habitat is threatened by forest clearing due to mining activities, and forest degradation by illegal logging, wildfires, timber harvesting for small-scale subsistence use, and slash-and-burn agricultural practices (tavy). The number of mature individuals of A. modesta is not known and cannot be estimated since the species is an epiphyte on the trunk or branches of trees in dry, humid, subhumid forests, and mossy shrublands.

Eighteen occurrences of Aerangis modesta are located outside protected areas and are threatened by forest clearing due to shifting agriculture and forest degradation due to small-scale agriculture, along with wood harvesting for subsistence and wildfires. Furthermore, 36 occurrences, even if present in protected areas, are threatened by illegal logging. In addition, 28 occurrences have been made in a footprint of a mining project that has undergone and is undergoing intense human pressure such as forest clearing. The species has ornamental value and is collected for horticultural purposes and trade (https://www.etsy.com/ca-fr/listing/935671470/aerangis-modesta-x-sib).

Two occurrences are located within Adda-Douéni and La Grille Natural Reserve in Comoros and 36 occurrences of the species are situated within 13 protected areas in Madagascar: Analamazaotra National Park, Andringitra National Park, Mantadia National Park, Isalo National Park, Ivohibe National Park, Monument Naturel of Alandraza Analavelo, Natural Resources Reserve of the Ankeniheny-Zahamena Corridor, Harmonious Protected Landscape of Ambohitr'Antsingy Montagne des Français, Harmonious Protected Landscape of Loky Manambato, Harmonious Protected Landscape of Galoko-Kalobinono, Harmonious Protected Landscape of Ampasindava, Natural Resources Reserve of Mangabe-Ranomena-Sahasarotra, and Zahamena National Park. The species is also currently listed in Appendix II of CITES. Seeds are banked in the Ambatovy seed bank.
