The genus Aegilops is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture as part of the wheat gene pool.

EURISCO reports 128 accessions of A. ventricosa held in European genebanks, 109 of which are reported to be of wild or weedy origin. Of these, 46 originate from within Europe, 29 of which are reported by EURISCO to originate from Spain (EURISCO 2015). Collection and duplicated ex situ storage of germplasm from other parts of the species' range is recommended.
