This species is reported to be uncommon throughout its range (van Slageren 1994) but noted as locally abundant in scattered populations by Economou and Maxted (2011).

The genus Aegilops is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) as part of the wheat gene pool.

Aegilops umbellulata has been assessed as Least Concern (LC) in Europe and EU 27 (Economou and Maxted 2011).

There are 250 germplasm accessions of wild origin reported by Genesys of which 151 are backed up at a second genebank. Furthermore, 58 accessions are duplicated and conserved ex situ in the Svalbard Seed Vault. Out of the 250 accessions, 238 were collected within the species' known native range (171 from Turkey, 30 from Azerbaijan, 13 from Syria, nine from Iran, five from Iraq, five from Lebanon, four from Greece and one from Serbia). A further twoe were collected outside the species' known native range (one from Palestine and one from the USA) and 10 are from undisclosed country of origin (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2017).

According to Botanical Garden Conservation International (BGCI 2013) this species has living collections in two botanical gardens worldwide, although the origin and location of the collections are not detailed in this resource (garden locations are undisclosed to protect rare and valuable plant species).

A. umbellulata occurs in a protected area in Turkey (Bachman et al. 2011).
