The genus Aegilops is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) as part of the wheat gene pool.

Aegilops triuncialis has been assessed as Least Concern (LC) in Europe and EU 27 (Duarte et al. 2011) and as Data Deficient (DD) in Switzerland (Moser et al. 2012).

There are 2,954 germplasm accessions of wild origin reported by Genesys of which 1,255 are backed up at a second genebank. Furthermore, 693 accessions are duplicated and conserved ex situ in the Svalbard Seed Vault. Out of the 2,954 accessions, 2,730 were collected within the species' native range (616 from Turkey, 420 from Greece, 409 from Armenia, 214 from Spain, 155 from Azerbaijan, 145 from Bulgaria, 128 from Portugal, 118 from Iran, 118 from Syria, 95 from Israel, 55 from Turkeminstan, 52 from Cyprus, 42 from Lebanon, 35 from the former USSR, 33 from Morocco, 30 from Tajikistan, 23 from Afghanistan, 21 from France and 21 from Macedonia). A further 19 were collected from Uzbekistan which is outside the known native's species range and 205 are from undisclosed country of origin (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2017).

According to Botanical Garden Conservation International (BGCI 2013) this species has living collections in 16 botanical gardens worldwide, although the origin and location of the collections are not detailed in this resource (garden locations are undisclosed to protect rare and valuable plant species).

It is known to occur in protected areas in Italy, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan (Bachman et al. 2011) as well as the Vallées et côteaux thermophiles de la région de Maurs in France. It is also documented as common in the Tigrovaia Balka Zapovednik in Tajikistan (EEA 2013).
