In Europe the species is reported by Economou and Maxted (2011) to be found in patches and locally abundant. The same authors report that the European subpopulation is stable. 

The correct population trend for this species in western Asia is not known, but it is thought to be stable with its major area of occurrence in central and northern parts of the Fertile Crescent (van Slageren 1994).

The genus Aegilops is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) as part of the wheat gene pool.

Aegilops speltoides has been assessed as Vulnerable (VU) in Bulgaria (Petrova and Vladimirov 2009) and as Least Concern (LC) in Europe and EU 27 (Economou and Maxted 2011).

There are 2,306 germplasm accessions of wild origin reported by Genesys of which 330 are backed up at a second genebank. Furthermore, 138 accessions are duplicated and conserved ex situ in the Svalbard Seed Vault. Out of the 2,306 accessions, 2,126 were collected within the species' native range (1,744 from Israel, 199 from Turkey, 110 from Syria, 38 from Iraq, 10 from Armenia, eight from Greece, seven from Iran, four from Bulgaria, three from Lebanon, one from Jordan, one from Palestine and one from the former USSR). A further eight were collected outside the species' native range (two one from Japan, two from Kazakhstan, one from China, one from Germany, one from Italy and one from Portugal) and 172 come from undisclosed country of origin (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2017). According to Botanical Garden Conservation International (BGCI 2013), this species has living collections in 11 botanical gardens worldwide, although the origin and location of the collections are not detailed in this resource (garden locations are undisclosed to protect rare and valuable plant species).

It is only known to occur in one protected area, Sakar Natural Monument, in Bulgaria. However, only 0.25% of this area is thought to be protected in reality (EEA 2013).
