The exact population size is unknown but it is thought to be uncommon throughout most of its range and represented by scattered subpopulations (van Slageren 1994).

The genus Aegilops is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) as part of the wheat gene pool.
Aegilops kotschyi has been assessed as Least Concern (LC) in Jordan (Taifour and El-Oqlah 2014).
There are 320 germplasm accessions of wild origin reported by Genesys of which 73 are backed up at a second genebank. Furthermore, 52 accessions are duplicated and conserved ex situ in the Svalbard Seed Vault. Out of the 320 accessions, 307 were collected within the species' native range (205 from Israel, 40 from Jordan, 21 from Syria, 12 from Egypt, nine from Azerbaijan, seven from Iran, three from Thurkey, theree from Ukraine, two from Lebanon, two from Palestine, two from the former USSR, and one from Lybia). A further three were collected outside the species' known native range (two from Kazakhstan and one from Japan) and 10 are from undisclosed country of origin (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2017).
According to BGCI (2013) there are living collections in three botanical gardens worldwide, although the origin and location of the collections are not detailed in this resource (garden locations are undisclosed to protect rare and valuable plant species).
