The European regional assessment (Eliáš et al. 2013) of this species reports it to be locally common where found and increasing. Throughout the rest of its range, it is reported to be common except for the Fertile Crescent (van Slageren 1994).

Threats in Armenia are reported to be uncontrolled grazing, agricultural expansion, urban expansion and road construction (Haruntyunyan et al. 2010). Whether these threats extend beyond this range is unknown.

The genus Aegilops is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) as part of the wheat gene pool.

Aegilops cylindrica is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) in Slovakia (Feráková et al. 2001), as Vulnerable (VU) in Switzerland (Moser et al. 2002), as Near Threatened (NT) in Croatia (Nikolić and Topić 2007) and in Hungary (Király et al. 2007) and as Least Concern in Europe and EU 27 (Eliáš et al. 2011).

There are 1,735 germplasm accessions of wild and natural origin reported by Genesys of which 576 are backed up at a second genebank. Furthermore, 472 accessions are duplicated and conserved ex situ in the Svalbard Seed Vault. Out of the 1,735 accessions, 1,776 were collected within the species' native range (638 from Armenia, 218 from Turkey, 150 from Azerbaijan, 127 from Kazakhstan, 100 from Hungary, 99 from Bulgaria, 82 from Iran, 50 from Russia, 44 from Georgia, 39 from Uzbekistan, 36 from Tajikistan, 25 from Ukraine, 13 from the former USSR, 12 from Serbia, nine from Kyrgystan, seven from Greece, seven from Macedonia, seven from Romania, seven from Slovak Republic and seven from Turkmenistan), one accession was collected from outside the species' known native range (USA) and 59 are from undisclosed country of origin (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2017). According to Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI 2013) this species has living collections in 10 botanical gardens worldwide, although the origin and location of the collections are not detailed in this resource (garden locations are undisclosed to protect rare and valuable plant species).

From the known distribution of the species and using the GeoCAT tool (Bachman et al. 2011), it is assumed that it occurs in several protected areas in the Netherlands (outside of the species' native distribution), Greece and Croatia —however, it is unlikely that active in situ conservation measures are in place at these sites. It is also documented to occur in the Askaniya-Nova Biosphere Reserve (Ukraine), the Burdov National Nature reserve (Slovakia), and to be common in the Tigrovaia Balka Zapovednik (Tajikistan) (EEA 2013, Information Centre for the Environment (ICE) 2013).
