Aegilops bicornis has been assessed as Endangered (EN) B1ab(i,ii,iii) in Jordan (Taifour and El-Oqlah 2014) and as Vulnerable [B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v)] in Cyprus (Tsintides et al. 2007), Europe and EU 27 [B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v)] (Kyratzis et al. 2011).
There are 566 germplasm accessions of wild origin reported by Genesys of which 20 are backed up at a second genebank. Furthermore, seven accessions are duplicated and conserved ex situ in the Svalbard Seed Vault. Out of the 5660 accessions, 545 were collected within the species' native range (529 from Israel, seven from Cyprus, five from Egypt, three from Jordan and one from Lybia). A further six were collected outside the species' known native range (three from Japan, two from Turkey and one from Romania) and 15 are from undisclosed country of origin (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2017).
Some subpopulations occur in protected areas, such as Dana Biosphere Reserve and Mujib Biosphere Reserve, where it is likely to have been conserved due to the reserve's Grazing Management Plan but without specific Conservation Action Plan (Taifour and El-Oqlah 2014). A monitoring programme should be implemented.
Research should be undertaken in order to clarify whether the two subpopulations from Spain and Iran belong to this species or whether they were simply introduced.
