The current population size is unknown but the population is thought to be declining. A decline in the number of subpopulations is suspected due to possible illegal trade and deforestation.

This species' habitat is restricted to higher areas and is extremely fragmented due to the characteristics of the vegetation and deforestation in the lower regions of the mountain ranges. Logging and conversion of forest to agriculture are significant threats in this ecoregion, particularly the latter due to the fertile soil of these forests. Araucaria forests have been reduced in area by 87% (WWF 2001). Thousands of private remnants ranging in size from one to 100 hectares, surrounded by pastures and agriculture, represent a significant part of the remaining vegetation. The taxon is prized as an ornamental and may be threatened by collection from the wild. Harvesting levels from the wild, however, are unknown.

This species has been collected from several protected areas including the Caraguata private natural reserve (Reserva Particular do Patrimonio Natural, RPPN). This species is cultivated as an ornamental throughout the world and one of the specimens collected by Martinelli in 1998 has been cultivated at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. No seed is currently known to have been collected as an ex situ conservation measure.
