The species is very abundant in areas which flood seasonally. This palm is abundant in areas exposed in the central mountains of  Providencia island in Colombia, where it becomes the dominant component of the flora. This species is abundant in Cuba where the estimated number of total mature individuals is over 10,000; which are distributed in seven subpopulations according to reports from 2015.

There are no major threats affecting this species. This species responds well to disturbance, like fire. This palm is used locally but this is not a threat.
In Cuba the species is threatened by deforestation and the occurrence of fires, hurricanes and invasive plants.

This species occurs within several protected areas like Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve in Campeche, Mexico.

In Colombia, it is necessary to assess the current status of populations and to search measures for the effective protection of the mountains where this palm grows. Inclusion in botanical gardens and living collections is also recommended.

In Cuba, the species occurs at the Protected Areas "Ciénaga de Zapata", "Los Pretiles", "Los Indios" and "San Ubaldo-Sabanalamar". It is cultivated at the botanical gardens of Cienfuegos, Havana, Las Tunas and Cupaynicú. A Site/species sustainable management is recommended.
