There is little information available on population trends in S. gramineum. Rintanen (1996) suggests that although there were small changes in population between the 1930s and 1980-1985 in 113 Finnish lakes, overall the population remained stable.

S. gramineum is listed as Least Concern in Finland, Sweden, the St. Petersburg region of Russia and Estonia, but Vulnerable in Latvia by Heino and Toivonen (2008). It is listed as Near Threatened in Norway (Kålås et al. 2006).
