About 450 individuals occurred on the island before more than 60% was lost due to a tsunami in 2004 (M. Sabu pers. comm. 2018). It is likely there is a negative population trend.

Even though the whole distribution is encompassed buy Great Nicobar Island Biosphere Reserve, it is restricted to a small area along the sea coast. Soil erosion and tsunamis are major threats.

Urgent conservation measures need to be undertaken to save this species. Seven plants are surviving in the Calicut University Botanical Garden (M. Sabu pers. obs. 2018). The whole population is in Great Nicobar Island Biosphere Reserve which may give individuals a level of protection (Protected Planet 2018).
