The wild population of this species is small. More than 1,000 mature individuals have been recorded at each of the six known sites within its range, with more than 50% producing flowers and setting seeds.

Deforestation and transformation of large parts of the forests into plantations have led to a significant decline in important native tree species. The forests of Yunnan are also under threat from increased wood collection for fuel and building supplies and loss of habitat due both to increasing development and continuing poverty.
