Population status and distribution on Taveuni remains poorly known. It is currently known from two subpopulations, and the one on Mt Koroturagaa has been described as large (Watling 2005) and common on the spur ridges (Watling 2006).

There are no recorded threats. It is also found in higher and wetter parts of Taveuni, which are less likely to be disturbed due to the steep slopes and climate. However, the island could be susceptible to hurricanes and cyclones.

The landowners of the Bouma community have set up the Bouma National Heritage Park that protects some of the forests (Watling 2005, 2006). Conservation recommendations for this species include: i) additional seed collections, ii) propagation for establishing ex situ populations, iii) a review of its population and status, and iv) awareness and engagement of land owners and regulatory authorities. Research is also needed into ecology and ecosystem service.
