Illegal removal of plants from the wild has been recorded, even within reserves. Habitat loss due to agricultural practices is also a factor affecting this species.

This species is listed in Appendix I of the CITES Appendices. Subpopulations are protected in the Mlawula Nature Reserve in Eswatini. Identification of further suitable sites for the formal protection of this species is needed. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
