This species is primarily threatened due to poaching of plants from the wild. Some of the decline in this species would have been due to the construction of the Jozini dam when the authorities authorised the removal of a large number of plants that would have been submerged by the dam.

This species is listed in Appendix I of the CITES Appendices. Subpopulations are found in the Mkuzi Game Reserve and the Pongolapoort Nature Reserve in South Africa and in the Mlawula Nature Reserve in Swaziland. Long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
