État de la populationExpert
It was originally thought to be a very restricted species in Zambia, where there were several reports of only one plant, but since they have been found in larger numbers across quite a wide range, and subpopulations are also found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Description complète des menacesExpert
Encephalartos schmitzii is threatened due to over-collecting for ornamental purposes and as a result of habitat loss caused by bush clearing for agricultural purposes. In Zambia there are reports of people removing plants for sale on the side of the road (I. Waters pers. comm.). Too frequent fires may have also driven this cycad's pollinator to extinction.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
This species is listed in Appendix I of the CITES Appendices. Subpopulations occur in the buffer area of the North Luangwa Reserve. Identification of further suitable sites for the formal protection of this species is needed. An education and awareness programme, the development of alternative livelihoods for local communities where the cycads occur, as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
