État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
It was previously estimated that there were less than 200 adult Encephalartos msinganus plants occurring in a few scattered sites. Field visits in 2011 confirmed that the plants are still targeted by poachers and all the cycads from one site had been reportedly removed (Scientific Authority 2016). There are unconfirmed reports that ongoing collecting has reduced the population to only a few plants.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Encephalartos msinganus is severely threatened due to poaching for ornamental purposes. Small cycad populations often experience reproductive failure and it is expected to occur in E. msinganus. Habitat destruction is also a general problem in the area.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
This species is listed in Appendix I of the CITES Appendices. It does not occur in any protected areas. There are numerous plants in cultivation so there is good potential for ex situ propagation. Identification of suitable sites for the formal protection of this species is needed. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of the population will support the conservation of this species.
