It is very difficult to accurately estimate numbers of plants in the wild due to the inaccessible terrain, but it is estimated that there are in excess of 10,000 plants.

As with most species within this genus, it is susceptible to over collecting for ornamental purposes. The seeds of this species are eaten during times of famine. Too frequent fires to create grazing areas may be a threat to this species (Maundu et al. 2001).
