Cycas tropophylla is an abundant species typically found in habitats that have been regarded as relatively inaccessible but there has been an increase in collecting for ornamental purposes and habitat destruction. This is estimated to have been >30% over the past 50 years (less than 3 generations), but further extrapolation is not possible and so this is considered to be a minimum population reduction.

This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. Plants occur in the Cat Ba National Park within the Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve, an archipelago in northern Viet Nam, which is adjacent to the Ha Long Bay World Heritage site. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
