There are two small subpopulations of this species. The larger has c.40 mature individuals on the Maslyatyn Mountain, whilst the smaller population on Strakhova Mountain has c.10 mature individuals (recently undergone a decline from 15-20 individuals to 10), giving an assumed maximum number of mature individuals of 50.

The main threats include habitat transformation and disruption due to chalk quarrying, soil erosion and hydrological changes. It is also threatened by hybridisation with other species, such as B. pendula.

A National Nature Park, 'Kremenets Mountains', has been created to protect the biodiversity of the area. Several individuals can be found in Ukrainian botanic gardens (Kremenets Botanical Garden (Kremenets, Ternopil region), Dendrological Park "Oleksandria" (Bila Tserkva, Kyiv region), O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden (Kyiv), M.M.Gryshko National Botanical Garden (Kyiv)). This species is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine as Critically Endangered (Diduch 2009).
